Books read in 2018

Every year I keep a list of every book I read during that year. I keep telling myself I’ll upgrade from a Notepad .txt to a spreadsheet, or start tracking comics and movies too, but I’ve been doing this since 2008 and that hasn’t happened yet.

Here’s this year’s list. Underline means it’s a reread; italics means I particularly liked it. Generally if I reread something it means I like it, but sometimes I reread just to confirm an earlier impression that I didn’t. I’ve bolded my absolute favourite books of the year, please read those (and then report back to me).

I read more this year than I have for a long time! A bunch of that was due to a lot of quick rereads (hi Terry Pratchett, hi LMB, hi my end-of-the-year review of my Tortall books), but a lot of that was also due to…. feeling pretty good and having free time this year. Who could have predicted that.

For some real rough number-crunching: I read more non-fiction than usual, around 22 books; I read roughly 33 SF and 59 fantasy, and a lot of those came from either single-author or mixed collections of short stories (19). I actually read more than two collections of poetry! (Please go read Short Talks. I will wait.) Around 22 of the books I read either had queer characters or were about queerness; I wish that number was bigger. A lot of the books I read were still by white authors, and I want to try to even out that ratio more next year.

Coming at some later date: more detail about specific stories I loved this year? Maybe. Who could say. Certainly not the person writing this.
